Mactan Island
Mactan Island offers hotels, resorts, shopping, entertainment and the international and domestic airport that links the capital of the Visayas with the rest of the Philippines, the region and the world. A quick glance at a map of Cebu shows Mactan as an island close to the capital, Cebu City. Travel to and from Mactan can also be by bus and ferry as well as flights to the airport.
Manila is the biggest city in the country and the national capital but Cebu was, for hundreds of years the main center of Spanish commerce and government for the islands. It still has ancient forts and churches and on Mactan Island there is the battleground memorial where Chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
Many of the hotels and resorts on Mactan have their own white sand beaches to rival the best world famous Boracay has to offer. It is also a lot easier and less complicated getting to one of these Mactan resorts than Boracay.
Mactan and Cebu City both have world class medical and dental facilities and practitioners and many people now travel there for procedures too costly in their own countries. While recuperating they enjoy the relaxed tropical beach lifestyle and the blend of modern entertainment and shopping.
